February 2010 Flash Fiction Boot Camp Agenda
During this session every participant will:
1) have one story edited offline by the instructor
2) have one story reviewed online by peers
3) use one story in a variety of exercises
4) be challenged to write new stories through daily writing exercises.
Prior to the start of this session, I will email every participant a list of which stories will be used for which sections of this boot camp.
Offline editing
Stories that have been selected to be reviewed offline will be emailed to the author. My reviews of those stories will not be posted to this forum, and no one else will see those reviews.
These are in-depth, rip-it-apart reviews from the standpoint of an editor who also writes flash fiction. They are geared toward helping you rethink your story and will hopefully lead to a more functional version that will be posted to the group as one of your daily exercises.
Group reviews
Stories that have been selected for group review will be posted to this forum by each participant (not me) the first day of the session. These stories will be posted under each participant's own board. The deadline to post your story for group review is Monday, February 1st by midnight EST.
Every participant must review everyone else's stories by the end of the week, on or before Saturday, February 6th at 10am EST.
Every participant will then have two days to revise their stories based on the reviews they received and post the revised versions. Revised stories must be posted by Monday, February 8th by 10am EST.
Every participant must review everyone else's revised stories by the end of the session, on or before Friday, February 12th at 10am EST. These second reviews will not be as in-depth as the previous reviews. Instead, these reviews will be geared towards telling the author if their stories have improved and what other changes that might consider. I will post specific instructions for these second reviews. This will include a series of questions to be answered.
This group review will be the bulk of our reviewing, though I will encourage every participant to comment on daily exercises, as well.
I understand that this will require a great deal of time, but remember that I promised you a time-intensive session...
Daily exercises
Throughout this 12-day session, I will post various exercises that will hone your writing skills. These will all be posted under a separate board, so check in each day. Participation is mandatory. You should find these exercises useful... and fun. You should end up with several stories you can polish up for publication. A few are geared towards specific markets, as well.
Some of the exercises will require you to make changes to your existing stories. These are the stories marked for use in "a variety of exercises." I will specify in each exercise whether you will be using your selected stories, writing new ones, or if you are able to use another already-written story.
These daily exercises will be left posted throughout the week for others to comment on. Do not delete these stories. You can, however, continue to edit these stories throughout the session.
I will read through all stories and exercises. At the end of each session, selected stories may be published in the Special Features section of Flash Me Magazine. Polishing your posted stories is in your best interest...
I know that's a lot of information to take in, but feel free to ask any questions you might have, either to the group, or to me directly.
